Our Story
The Urban Design Fox platform is a brand created by a startup called Arctic Fox Concept. The company was founded by two creative Belgians. After having worked for a multinational, they decided that they had a different view of the ideal product as well as the role and responsibility of a company with regard to sustainability.
We are still a very young company, employing less than 30 people, but we are growing fast as we see consumers from all over Europe liking our products and what they stand for.
Something Unique
We believe that a piece of furniture is something more than a functional item. Often placed in a central spot of your home, it is a direct reflection of who you are and what your style is. When designing a new piece or collection, we always aim to create something that is not just distinctive and stylish, but that also reflects a deeper idea.
Quality That Lasts
Seeing its central importance in your home, people often spend significant time to find the right piece of furniture. After having gone through all that effort, you probably are not looking to do it again just a few years later… That is why we only use the best materials and work with expert craftsmen to ensure you receive a product of the highest possible quality that will steal the spotlight in your home for many years to come.
More Sustainable
As a company we value sustainability as much as we do design. That is why we are obsessed with finding materials that leave a smaller ecological footprint, and that ideally are recyclable after they have served their purpose. We have to admit, this does not mean that certain designs do not hold a single element that is not 100% sustainable, yet we do our best. Moreover, every day we continue our search to make our products more sustainable.
Why Sustainable Furniture Matters
We live in an amazing time, where human ingenuity has led to break through advancements that have completely revolutionized the way we live. However … this modern way of life does come with a steep price as our consumerist existence requires us to consume an ever increasing amount of natural resources, and resulting in growing waste and pollution. These factors impact us all not only on an environmental, but also economic (scarcity and rising costs) and social (health and wellness) level.
If we all are to have a global future on this planet, it is clear that we will need work together to find a more balanced and sustainable approach, and this by protecting our ecosystems, air quality, and natural resources.
Now what is important is that these efforts are not just the responsibility of governments and their policies. We can all do part by changing just small habits in our daily lives.
For example, even when buying furniture… According to the WWF, our planet has lost 1.3 million km² of forest since 1990 (an area larger than South Africa, at a staggering rate of 1000 football fields every hour). Did you know that European wood consumption alone surpassed 700 million m³ in 2017, and is expected to cross the 800 million m³ by 2025? Out of this amount 15% (100 million m³) is used for the production of wooden furniture.
This significant yearly need for wood of course has its toll on the environment. Global deforestation does not just have a negative impact on climate and CO2 levels, it also disrupts bio-diversity as 70% of Earth’s land animals live in forests (and many cannot survive without it), whilst 1.6 billion people rely on benefits forests offer, including food, fresh water, clothing, traditional medicine and shelter (source WWF)
By choosing to buy a piece of furniture that is not made from regular sawn wood, but rather a more sustainable alternative, you can already help to make a positive change.
