Duradoura Cork Furniture Collection

Natural Warmth of Portuguese Cork

Our Duradoura Table & Bench Collection

UNUSUAL YET CONTEMPORARY

Duradoura is a Portuguese word which literally means lasting or Permanent. With this beautiful range of unusual cork furniture, you can bring that natural feeling of Mediterranean warmth right into your home. Locally crafted to perfection in Portugal from only the finest and pure materials, these designs will add nothing short of a conversation piece to your interior. Central to each of these designs is the usage of Portuguese cork. This unique material feels warm and soft upon touch, yet is extremely tough and resistant. It can also absorb sound and has anti-allergic properties. But maybe most importantly, it is a renewable material, harvested without damaging the tree itself, and 100% recyclable once it has lived out its intended purpose.

Natural Cork
This is cork in its natural shade. The raw cork is first grinded into a very fine granule before being pressed and sculpted into a perfect table top. The natural beige colour is distinctive yet minimalistic, and matches a wide variety of living room styles.
Amber Cork
In this version we worked with a larger granule of cork, which allowed us to emphasize even more the raw character of the material. As you move your hand across the table top you will still feel the granule pattern. The amber colour comes from a similar, yet shorter process as dark cork.
Dark Cork
This version of cork gets its distinctive dark, chocolate like colour as a result of a natural steaming process. Water vapor is injected throughout medium sized granules which cause the natural resins in the material to react, resulting in the material to expand and get its distinctive darker shade.

A Renewable Material

We decided to work with cork not only because of its distinctive look and feel or characteristics. Perhaps even more important to us is the renewable character of this amazing material.

Cork as we know it is in fact the tree bark of the cork oak tree (Quercus Suber). This bark is removed by hand, with the greatest care and without harming the tree. Moreover, all the cork we use comes from Portugal, the world’s proud owner of the biggest population of cork forest (736.000 hectares), where each oak is protected by law and cannot be cut down.

This means that each tree is able to provide cork in a renewable way for the full duration of its life cycle, which is a staggering 200 years! Throughout that period, they are also helping to provide us with fresh air, as they are responsible for converting 14 million tons of CO2 every year!

Recyclable

Cork is a remarkable material that can easily be reused once it has lived out its original purpose. All of the material we use in our cork furniture can be cleaned and reprocessed into new products. The cork can for example be recycled in cork floors or construction insulation plates, but also the metal that is used for the base of each cork furniture item can easily be cleaned, melted and reused in new metal products.
