Zhú Zi Bamboo Furniture Collection

NATURAL ELEGANCE

Modern design meets Eastern culture with this beautiful collection of unique bamboo furniture items. Its sober yet elegant design is contrasted by the distinctive texture of this unusual material. We decided to work with high quality bamboo for this range as it is not only unusual and beautiful, but also because it can be harvested in a sustainable and renewable way.

The name of the collection, Zhú Zi, is Mandarin for “made of bamboo”. To create our collection of unique designs we worked with three kinds of bamboo: natural, carbonized and dark carbonized. This material comes directly from the Anji county in China, which is known to offer the finest bamboo, and carved to perfection in our own workshop.

Step 1: The Harvest

The first a probably most important step is finding the right material to work with. Local farmers look for those bamboo culms that have fully matured and carefully cut them by hand while leaving the root system intact so new shoots can grow. Only the very best are selected to be used in our bamboo furniture designs.

Step 2: Processing

After being harvested, the culms of bamboo are split across the length into long strips. These strips are first flattened with a roller, after which they are boiled and finally pressed into solid plates out of which bamboo furniture can be made.

Step 3: Colour

At this stage we have natural bamboo plates which have a typical light, almost creamy, colour. However, the bamboo strips or plates can also first be “carbonized” before we start working with them, wich causes the colour of the material to darken (ranging from amber to a dark shade). In the below section you can read more about this carbonization process.

Step 4: Crafting

Once this raw material reaches us, our designers can finally start crafting it into the beautiful designs we envisioned. Throughout this process, special focus is put on emphasizing the natural character of the bamboo. As you pass your hands over the surface of our tables and feel each perfectly aligned grain, you will sense and experience  this level of perfection.

WHAT IS YOUR STYLE?

Natural

Bamboo in its purest form. After being harvested, the bamboo culms are split across the length into long strips. These strips are first flattened with a roller, after which they are boiled and finally pressed into plates which have a typical light, almost creamy, colour.
Carbonized

In this process, the bamboo is steamed under pressure, so that the sugar in the fibers heats up and the color of the material becomes darker. Think of heating sugar to “caramelize” it, this is basically the same principle.
Dark

This beautiful dark color is achieved by the same process as with carbonized bamboo. However, the process is now being continued much longer. In line with the same analogy as before, think of letting sugar “burn” in a pan.
Bamboo furniture with wood from Anji

The Anji County

As we only want to work with the very best of materials, we searched the globe to find the finest bamboo. This led us to the Anji County in China. Thanks to its optimal climate and soil conditions, this 60,000 hectare green valley is known for some of the most valued bamboo in the world. After reaching maturity, the bamboo culms are cut by hand without harming the plant itself, and only the very best are selected to be used in our bamboo furniture designs.

Chinese Culture

Besides being one of the most used construction materials throughout Chinese history, bamboo also holds a significant cultural meaning for its people. In traditional Chinese folklore, bamboo is used as an analogy for one of the four guiding principles for model behaviour (the other three are plum blossom, chrysanthemum and orchid). Originating from its physical characteristics, bamboo symbolizes uprightness and tenacity.
