Thanks to its high density and the fact that it grows so straight and has little knots, Bamboo is an incredibily strong and hard material. It is in fact 20% harder than oak (the gold standard in hardwood furniture), and its tensile strength is higher than many alloys of steel! As such, bamboo furniture is particularly suitable to withstand everyday use, and is far more resistant to damage than its counterparts made from traditional hardwoods.
As Bamboo is a grass, harvesting it does not mean you need to replant a new shoot like with other trees. After a Bamboo culm has been “cut” it will just regrow, which means that new bamboo can be harvested every few years without harming the plant.
Not only can Bamboo be harvested in a renewable way, it also grows back at an incredible speed. In fact, Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. On average, a Bamboo culm will be full grown and ready for harvest after 3 to 5 years. This compared to an oak tree which takes around 20 years to mature!
The complex network of bamboo roots protects the soil from erosion and flooding. Because harvesting leaves the bottom part of the bamboo and its roots intact there is no adverse effect of top soil erosion. This unlike hardwood harvesting, where the topsoil and nutrients are washed away by rainfall because the stumps are removed to provide space for new crops.
After harvesting, every little piece of the bamboo culm is used. This very much unlike regular wood processing, where there is often waste in the form of saw dust, bark, branches, etc.
Bamboo is capable of converting 35% more CO2 into oxygen than other trees. It can absorb up to 12 tonnes of carbon dioxide per hectare every year! This makes it a crucial partner in supplying our planet with clean and fresh air.
Unlike other wooden materials, the harvesting of cork is done in a renewable way. Cork is actually the bark of the cork oak, which is harvested without causing any damage to the tree itself. On top, the cork used in our designs can also be recycled and reused in new products.
The slow combustion of cork makes it a natural fire retardant and a kind of barrier against fires. Cork burns without a flame and does not emit toxic gases during combustion.
Cork does not absorb dust and prevents the appearance of mites and, therefore, contributes to protection against allergies.
The 40 million cells in each cubic centimeter of cork act as a real decibel absorber, making it an excellent sound and vibration insulator. Perfect to help create serenity in your home.
