A Fine Art

There is a fine art to carving a cork wash counter to perfection. The process involves grinding down the raw cork so it is smooth to the touch, whilst still keeping the natural granularity of the material.

Sustainability

Cork itself is a renewable material that can be harvested without damaging the tree. On top, all of the designs in our NuSpa collection are actually created from waste cork that is left over after the production process of wine cork stoppers.

Cork is totally impermeable to liquids which makes it easy clean.

CAN I REALLY use this a washbasin?

Absolutely! Not only is cork waterproof, the struture itself is made from high density cork and as a result is very strong.

HAS THE basin been Varnished?

No. But, we did add a waterbased sealant, although cork itself is already very resilient and waterproof, to add even more protection.

Strong

Thanks to its high density and the fact that it grows so straight and has little knots, Bamboo is an incredibily strong and hard material. It is in fact 20% harder than oak (the gold standard in hardwood furniture), and its tensile strength is higher than many alloys of steel! As such, bamboo furniture is particularly suitable to withstand everyday use, and is far more resistant to damage than its counterparts made from traditional hardwoods.

Renewable

As Bamboo is a grass, harvesting it does not mean you need to replant a new shoot like with other trees. After a Bamboo culm has been “cut” it will just regrow, which means that new bamboo can be harvested every few years without harming the plant.

Fast Regeneration

Not only can Bamboo be harvested in a renewable way, it also grows back at an incredible speed. In fact, Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. On average, a Bamboo culm will be full grown and ready for harvest after 3 to 5 years. This compared to an oak tree which takes around 20 years to mature!

Prevents Erosion

The complex network of bamboo roots protects the soil from erosion and flooding. Because harvesting leaves the bottom part of the bamboo and its roots intact there is no adverse effect of top soil erosion. This unlike hardwood harvesting, where the topsoil and nutrients are washed away by rainfall because the stumps are removed to provide space for new crops.

No Waste

After harvesting, every little piece of the bamboo culm is used. This very much unlike regular wood processing, where there is often waste in the form of saw dust, bark, branches, etc.

CO2 Conversion

Bamboo is capable of converting 35% more CO2 into oxygen than other trees. It can absorb up to 12 tonnes of carbon dioxide per hectare every year! This makes it a crucial partner in supplying our planet with clean and fresh air.
